And So It Goes Janet Givens’ Blog More on the Blog's name

And so it goes -- sometimes So it goes -- the lament that permeates Kurt Vonnegut’s classic Slaughterhouse-Five, addresses the notion that certain events are beyond our control. It honors fatalism, resignation, and the inevitability of death (among other things), and the consequent acceptance of our fate.

Just as Vonnegut tried to educate his readers to a greater understanding of the human condition, And So It Goes, the blog, tries to educate readers to a greater understand of the culture that, inevitably and unconsciously, molds us.

We do that by looking at cultures that are different than our own. And we pay special attention to the parts of those cultures that trouble us, that make us gasp, that make us turn away.

Here on my blog, we take the time to take a closer look, to chew on what we’ve been swallowing whole. Adopting the existential notion that we create our own reality, we understand that that reality is also molded by our environment and perpetuated by our culture.

And so it goes.

What’s Your Cell Phone VoiceMail Message Say?

I got a new cell phone recently.

As the world stood in line to pick up the latest iPhone 8, I graduated to the 6S. I pride myself on that actually.

As with all new phones in the 21st century, the voicemail must be set up anew. I used the default message for the first few days, but finally settled down to record a more personal greeting.  I’d done this before; no need to write down what I was going to say.

Hah!

Here’s what came out:

You’ve reached Janet at her cell phone. Ummmm, if you, errrrrr. (chuckle, chuckle) Ah, you know what to do, just do it.

I hung up the phone thinking I’d collect myself and record a better one. Perhaps I’d even write it down this time. Hours went by; then days. Eventually, the unconventionality of my message grew on me.

What do you think? Would you change it if this were yours? What’s your voicemail message story?

Still looking for that perfect under-ten-dollar gift that you don’t have to mail?  Here’s the link to set you on your way.

My landline answerphone says ‘We’re out rocking, so please leave a message.’ People seem to like it!

I have had my current iPhone 7 for more than a year. You’ve just reminded me that I have no idea what my voicemail message is or how I can check or change it. Today’s task is…..

PS thanks for finding and following my blog. The compliment has been returned 😊

Isn’t it nice to be retired so we can tackle these “challenges” as they arise? Thanks so much for stopping by, Clive. I do enjoy those songs you post about. Many are new to me. Could be they didn’t get across the “pond” in their day? Be sure, next time, to click the little box that lets see your blog’s link.

Would I get that recording, “The person you are calling has a voice mailbox that is not yet set up. Good bye.” if I were to call you? Oh no!! Turns out even the default one must be turned on when we get new phones. Who knew??

I’m still at an older iPhone model, too. I don’t know what my message says. I don’t think I changed it the last time I got a new phone–many years ago.

I had a 6s and didn’t have my protective cover on it, ran over it so had to get a new one—on 7 now—do you need it, cost $50 and going to the trash—sending you a message

It still works? Even though you ran over it? Wow. I’ll bet the Apple folks might like to make a commercial of that one. I pass all my old ones down to the g’kids. But thanks. (your FB Message was what I woke up to this morning. Now I understand.) 🙂

Uh oh, Merril. See my note to Susan above. Something to do now that Hanukkah is over, huh? I hope you continue to have a peaceful and joyous holiday season.

It’s been so long, I don’t even know. I’m almost certain it’s lame. Perhaps I should set up one of those mind-bogglingly frustrating automated menus — “if you’re a robot, press ‘1”, if you’re calling to tell me about another cruise or resort package I’ve miraculously won, press ‘2,’ etc. — then just play some elevator music for twenty minutes or more, occasionally interrupted by “you’re call is important and will be answered by the soonest available representative. Your estimated wait time is . . . 47 . . . minutes” . . .

Thanks for sharing this post @ Senior Salon, Janet.
As I have a combo work and private phone (yes I am not retired), I have to have a dual greeting. This, unfortunately, makes for a long message, which I wish I can cut in half, but then one of the two parties will not know what’s up!!

Hi Esme. Welcome. Your comment reminds me of a vm I heard once for a family of five: “f you want Harry, press 1; if you want Mary, press 2 …”. I’m thinking you could have, “if you want me in my xyz hat, press 1; otherwise press 2.” And I still remember party lines! Amazing how far we’ve come.
